At the heart of the new Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo stands the large apsidal mosaic, a vision of light and faith that envelops the altar and accompanies the community's prayers.
The work, entirely handmade in the historic Florentine workshop Mellini Mosaici Arte, represents the encounter between contemporary sacred art and Italian mosaic tradition, in harmonious dialogue with the solemn architecture of the new building.
Meaning and symbolism
At the center of the mosaic dominates the figure of the Risen Christ, glorious and triumphant over death, rising amid golden rays and fields of iridescent light, a sign of Redemption and Eternal Life.
At his sides, two peacocks, ancient symbols of resurrection, divine beauty, and the immortality of the soul, are reflected in the gold background, recalling the early Christian tradition of Byzantine mosaics.
The design stems from a specific intention: to transform the apse into an epiphany of light and hope, where each tile reflects not only natural light, but also the faith of the community that gathers there.
The composition, designed to interact with the cross suspended above the altar, draws the gaze of the faithful upwards, suggesting an ascending path that leads from the earthly world to the mystery of the divine.
Each tile, cut and laid by hand, is composed of Venetian enamels and gold leaf, carefully chosen to create unique chromatic depths and luminous vibrations. The opus tessellatum layout follows the curves of the apse semi-dome, allowing natural light to enhance the volumes and make the mosaic alive, dynamic, and changing throughout the day.
The project required months of work and precision craftsmanship, combining the technical expertise developed in the Mellini workshop in Florence with the spiritual and pastoral vision of the Fargo community. Once completed, the work was shipped and assembled on site with great attention to the dialogue between mosaic, architecture, and liturgy.
This mosaic was born from a constant dialogue between art, architecture, and spirit. Its creation was made possible thanks to the passionate and sensitive collaboration of many people who shared the idea of making beauty a place of encounter with God.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to:
To all of them, and to the Holy Cross Church community, our sincere thanks for sharing this experience of art and faith with us.
