In 2016, St. John Neumann Parish St. John Neumann ad Austin (Texas) ha inaugurato una cupola a mosaico monumentale realizzata dal laboratorio Mellini Art Glass & Mosaics di Firenze, che si distingue non solo per la sua imponenza ma anche per la sua profondità teologica ed artistica.
The dome has a diameter of 72 feet (approximately 22 meters), making it one of the largest mosaic domes in the United States.
It was composed of over 10 million pieces of enamel mosaic, top-quality Italian non-transparent glass paste, in over 1,200 shades of color, carefully selected for their hue and brightness.
The process took years of work: liturgical and iconographic design, full-scale preparatory drawings, prototypes and models, right up to the actual production of the tiles and their installation by our specialized staff.
The Florence workshop (Mellini) also oversaw the artistic phase: the life-size design, the choice of colors, the craftsmanship of the tiles, the cutting, and the installation.

At the center stands the victorious Lamb (“Lamb of God”) holding the book with seven seals (from the Book of Revelation), surrounded by seraphim and cherubim, symbols of heavenly glory.
Around the center, in the first ring, are the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each in their traditional symbolic forms (man, lion, bull, eagle). They affirm the Word of God, the Revelation.

An outer ring represents the Twelve Apostles (each with instruments or symbols of their ministry or martyrdom), alternating with the twelve sons/tribes of Israel (each with a shield bearing the symbol of the tribe), thus uniting the people of the Old Testament with the apostolic community.
On the outer edge, a band bears the Lord's Prayer in visual or textual form.
The pendants beneath the dome depict angels holding inscriptions with the Latin words of the four attributes of the Church according to the Creed: Unam, Sanctum, Catholicam, Apostolicam (One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic).
La cupola è concepita per elevare lo sguardo e il cuore: entrare nella navata della chiesa e sollevare la vista verso il soffitto significa entrare in contatto con la dimensione celeste, partecipare visivamente al mistero della comunione dei santi, della gloria divina.
I colori — dorati, gemmati, intensi — trasmettono una luminosità che non è solo decorativa, ma simbolica: il chiarore della gloria, la luce divina che vince le tenebre.
Il mosaico, come medium, offre una durabilità nel tempo, una fisicità che resiste agli agenti atmosferici e al passare degli anni, mantenendo la vivacità del colore e la nitidezza delle forme. Il fatto che sia fatto a mano, con smalti raffinati italiani, aggiunge valore artistico e artigianale.
Il laboratorio ha messo in campo competenza tecnica, ma anche sensibilità artistica e conoscenza della tradizione dei mosaici e delle arti sacre italiane.
