In the place where for centuries the light of the Baptistery of St. John has accompanied the mystery of birth into Christian life, four new stained glass windows have been installed as luminous testimonies of holiness and history. Created by the Studio Mellini Mosaici e Vetrate d'Arte in Florence, based on designs by and in collaboration with Francesco Mori, they combine the tradition of Florentine glass art with a deeply contemporary theological and iconographic sensibility.
The stained glass windows, made using the traditional technique of leaded glass and with blown glass painted in grisaille, are designed as a chorus of light celebrating exemplary figures of Christian faith and culture: Saint Ranieri of Pisa, Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo, Saint Paul VI, and Saint John Paul II.
Four figures who, in different times and ways, were able to unite faith and reason, spirituality and commitment to the world, bearing witness to the fact that holiness is always embodied in history.
In the first stained glass window, Saint Ranieri, patron saint of the city of Pisa, appears in the luminous serenity of one who has found his spiritual home in conversion. The saint, dressed in the humble garb of a pilgrim, holds the cross and the Gospel book, symbols of his life of penance and preaching. The light passing through the golden and blue glass refers to the inner light of faith, which guides every man on his journey back to God.
The second stained glass window depicts the Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo, economist, sociologist, and committed layman, a figure of profound relevance to the Church and modern Christian thought.
Toniolo is depicted with the symbols of his intellectual commitment—books and study tools—but his gaze is directed upward, signifying that true science opens itself to the wisdom of God.
The tones of the glass—amber, green, and gold—evoke the fruitfulness of a mind enlightened by faith.
The third stained glass window is dedicated to Saint Paul VI, the pope of Vatican Council II and dialogue with the contemporary world.
He is depicted in a blessing gesture, with his gaze turned towards the baptismal font, as if to prolong his teaching on the Church's openness to the world as a mission and as love.
Behind him, light passes through clear, subtly gilded glass, a sign of evangelical transparency and faith that illuminates modernity.
The fourth stained glass window is dedicated to Saint John Paul II, the traveling pope, apostle of peace and human dignity.
He is depicted with his crosier and papal mantle blowing in the wind, symbolizing the Holy Spirit guiding the Church in the world.
The luminous background, crossed by shades of blue, red, and gold, celebrates the joy of the Gospel that he proclaimed with strength and tenderness on every continent.
Together, the four stained glass windows form a spiritual journey that unites local and universal holiness, the history of Pisa and that of the Church of our time.
The collaboration between Studio Mellini and Francesco Mori has given rise to a visual language capable of blending the precision of iconographic design with the rich colors and luminosity of Florentine glass.
The light that passes through these stained glass windows is not only decorative, but theology in visible form: it transforms the space of the Baptistery into a liturgy of light, where the faithful are invited to contemplate, recognize, and give thanks.
The Studio Mellini Mosaici e Vetrate d’Arte in Florence would like to express its gratitude to the Capitolo Primaziale Pisana, the Soprintendenza di Pisa, and in particular to Francesco Mori, for his artistic and iconographic collaboration, which has made possible a profound dialogue between tradition and modernity.
These stained glass windows are dedicated to the Church and the city of Pisa, as a sign of continuity between the faith that shaped its past and the light that still illuminates its path today.
